First published in 1978 as Disco News, Dance Music Report was an American twice monthly music magazine focussing on the music played in nightclubs and for radio DJs who promoted dance music. It continued to be published until 1992. Alongside reporting about dance music, DMR published various charts, including a Hi-NRG chart, throughout the 80s.

Above is a scan of DMR’s Hi-NRG top 80 for 1988, and below is the typed out chart.

  1. I don’t know if my old friend Dean Ferguson complied this year end chart, but it is a pretty bad reflection of 1988 HINRG club scene. Mid-charters (Power of Persuasion, et al) finishing way above top 10 hits (I Can Fly, This Girl’s Back In Town, If You Love Somebody, etc.). Songs with long-run charts or club classics completely ignored (I Don’t Know If You’re Dead or Alive, Voyage Voyage, Requiem, others). Just weird.

Although it is far from perfect too (and much too short), the Record Mirror chart is a much better representation of 1988 IMHO.
