80s Hi – NRG & Eurobeat

There were only two independent record shops in London that specialised in sellling imported American and Canadian Hi-NRG, Italian Italo Disco and other Continental Euro Disco records. One of the shops was Record Shack in Soho’s Berwick Street, which had its own Hi-NRG Record Shack label until around 1987. The other was Record Cellar, a hard to find basement located in an alley way in Covent Garden.

These shops compiled their own Hi-NRG charts from actual record sales that somewhat echoed the Record Mirror Hi-NRG charts. They also proved to be a valuable addition, offering alternative tracks to the more predictable Record Mirror Hi-NRG charts.

The chart below is a Hi-NRG Chart published by the Record Shack shop in December 1987. The Record Shack shop in Berwick Street closed in around 1988.
