Billboard Hot Dance Chart 29th October 1983

It’s quite interesting to compare the Billboard Hot Dance Chart with the UK and European Hi-NRG and Italo Charts. The Billboard Dance chart would often have a very good showing of Hi-NRG, as well as Synth Pop tracks, unlike the British mainstream dance clubs, which focussed their music policy mainly on soul and black music. In this Billboard chart, there are tracks from Stephanie Mills, Earlene Bentley, Gloria Gaynor, Waterfront Home, Lime and Modern Rocketry that, apart from Gloria Gaynor, remained firmly in the gay clubs in the UK, that mostly failed to get any mainstream interest or play at all.

MTV Heavy Rotation List 29th October 1983

The MTV Heavy Rotation list has synth Pop and rock tracks from the likes of Billy Idol, Pat Benatar and Z Z Top. These tracks would would find their way into gay club D. J. sets from time to time, especially in the larger American clubs like The Saint in New York, where some DJs would include mainstream pop/rock and synth pop into their Hi-NRG mixes.
