Record Shack Boystown/Hi-NRG Dance Chart 30th April 1983

There were only two independent record shops in London that specialised in sellling imported American and Canadian Hi-NRG, Italian Italo Disco and other Continental Euro Disco records. One of the shops was Record Shack in Soho’s Berwick Street, which had its own Hi-NRG Record Shack label, and would become a huge part of the Hi-NRG scene. Here is their top 20 sales chart as published in the NME for 30th April 1983, showing a hybrid of British synth pop and imported Boystown, with Bobby O’s productions very much in the ascendency.

By way of comparison here is the Billboard Dance chart for the last week of April 1983. It has a good showing of Boystown and Hi-NRG, as well as Synth Pop tracks, which would find their way into in gay club DJ mix sets.
