There were only two independent record shops in London that specialised in sellling imported American and Canadian Hi-NRG, Italian Italo Disco and other Continental Euro Disco records. One of the shops was Record Shack, which had its own Hi-NRG Record Shack label. The other was Record Cellar, a hard to find basement located in an alley way in Covent Garden. For me, Record Cellar was like being a kid in a candy store with racks and racks of the latest Hi-NRG import 12 inch vinyl to browse through and listen to. In the mid 80s I was probably visiting the shop at least twice a week!
Both Record Shack and Record Cellar contributed Hi-NRG charts to various publications like Gay Times and Gay News. The below is a Record Cellar chart from one of those publications (unfortunately I don’t know which one) published at some point in the Summer of 1987. These charts were an excellent alternative to the more predictable Record Mirror Hi-NRG charts, which seemed to be stuffed full of a cetain London DJ and producer’s productions on his own record label.
